Bavaria, Kingdom. An Order of St. Michael, IV Class Cross with Crown, by Gebrüder Hemmerle
(Orden zum Heiligen Michael, IV. Klasse mit Krone). Instituted 16 February 1837 by King Ludwig I. (1910-1918 issue). Constructed of silver with enamels, consisting of a Cross Pattée with blue enameled arms, the obverse with an oval centerpiece bearing a detailing raised image of. St Michael trampling the devil, wielding a sword and shield, the latter with a blue inscription of “QUIS UT DEUS” (“WHO IS LIKE GOD?”), the reverse with a silver centerpiece bearing a blue-enameled inscription of “VIRTUTI” (“VIRTUE”), the twelve o’clock arm with an integral loop and hinge connection to a hollow crown suspension, in turn with a loop connecting to a period correct tri-fold replacement ribbon, the centerpiece with a maker’s mark between the twelve and three o’clock arns of “G.H.” for Gebrüder Hemmerle, München, and a silver content number of “980”, measuring 35.57 mm (w) x 60.46 mm (h) (inclusive of crown suspension), weighing 23.1 grams, chipping is evident to the enamel of the reverse six and nine o’clock arms, in overall better than very fine condition.
