(Herzoglich Braunschweigischer Orden Heinrichs des Löwen, Großkreuz). Instituted 1834. Issued 1834-1918. A superb grand cross set of fine quality and craftsmanship, with a hollow sash badge in Gold, consisting of a blue enameled Maltese cross with Gold boarders and delicately hand painted peacock feathers, ball finials, with the crowned royal cipher of Wilhel in each quadrant, obverse centre with a finely hand painted Hanovarian horse of red enameled background and hand painted white boarder, reverse centre presenting Motto “IMMOTA FIDES”, with institution date surround, measuring 63.63 mm (w) x 96.10 mm (h - inclusive of enameled crown suspension), on original silk sash, extremely fine. Accompanied by the star of the order, of equally fine manufacture, consisting of an eight pointed star, each composed of a cluster of five individual rays, with a Gold Maltese cross in blue enamels and ball finials, obverse centre presenting the royal cipher of Wihel, red enamel surround with Motto “IMMOTA FIDES”, reverse with two uniform stays, as well as a vertical pinback, with a functional hinge/catch assembly; marked “A. Lemme, Hof-Goldschmid, Juwilier & Graveur in Braunschweig who operated between 1850 and 1900, measuring 87.22 mm (w) x 87.27 mm (h); toned silver, extremely fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
