Braunschweig, Duchy. A Medal for Art and Science, Museum Piece c.1903
(Medaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft). Constructed of silvered bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of an oval laurel leaf wreath, the obverse with a rightward-facing profile of Karl I, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with a Braunschweig horse topped by a royal crown, circumscribed by an inscription of “DEM VERDIENST IN KUNST UND WISSENSCHAFT” (“FOR MERIT IN ART AND SCIENCE”), the obverse with an etched date of “1903” and an illegible maker’s mark, measuring 37.50 mm (w) x 68.97 mm (h), in extremely fine condition.
