Frankfurt, Free City. A Field Service Decoration for 1848/49
(Felddienstzeichen für 1848/49). Instituted 21 February 1854 by the Senate of the Free City of Frankfurt. (1854 issue). Constructed of bronze, on loop for suspension, consisting of a Cross Pattée with ribbed arms, the obverse bearing an inscription of “1848 UND 1849” across the three and nine o’clock arms, with the six o’clock arm bearing an oval oak leaf wreath, the twelve o’clock arm bearing a Frankfurt-style eagle, the reverse bearing an inscription of “FÜR TREUEN DIENST IM KRIEGE” (“FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE IN WAR”), unmarked, measuring 32.40 mm (w) x 36.68 mm (h), weighing 15.5 grams, a scarce decoration in near extremely fine condition.
