Hanover, Kingdom. A Miniature Royal Guelphic Order, Austrian Made, c.1870

(Guelphen-Orden Miniatur). Instituted 1815 by Prince Regent George (later King George III). Of Austrian manufacture, consisting of a solid Gold Maltese Cross with each arm topped by finials and with a stylized lion passant in each quadrant of the Cross, the centre of the obverse bears a white enameled Hanoverian horse on a vibrant red enameled background within a ring of blue enamels featuring the order motto of “NEC ASPERA TERRENT” (“Not Afraid of Difficulties”), the reverse centre features a red enamel centre, topped with an engraved gold crown, while underneath the Roman numerals “MDCCCXV” for the institution date of 1815 are engraved, the cross is suspended from a hollow swivel crown which is in turn topped with a loop for hanging, hallmarked on ring with minor gold 760/1000, Vienna, Austria, as well as secondary partial makers mark measuring 27 mm (h) x 17.5 mm (w), weighing 3.3 grams, in near mint condition.
