Hesse, Grand Duchy. A General Honor Decoration, Type III
(Allgemeine Ehrenzeichen) Instituted 25 September 1843. 1894-1918 Issue. A circular medal constructed of silver, the obverse bears the left facing bust of Ernst Ludwig, circumscribed by the inscription ERNST LUDWIG GROSSHERZOG VON HESSEN, the reverse centre presents the inscription “FÜR KRIEGSVERDIENSTE” (FOR WAR MERIT) encompassed by a laurel and oak wreath tied with a ribbon at the bottom, with loop for suspension on a blue ribbon with red stripes, measuring 33.42 m m (w) x 37.59 mm (h), very fine.
