Hesse, Grand Duchy. A General Medal for Rescue of Humane Life, Exhibition Example
(Allgemeines Ehrenzeichen für Rettung von Menschenleben, Museumsstück). Instituted 25 Septemeber 1843 by Grand Duke Ludwig II. (1894-1896 issue). Constructed of silvered bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a leftward-facing profile of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, the reverse with an inscription of “FÜR RETTUNG VON MENSCHEN LEBEN” (“FOR RESCUE OF HUMAN LIFE”), within a laurel and oak wreath, unmarked, measuring 32.97 mm in diamter, weighing 15.9 grams, an exhibition example in near extremely fine condition.
