Hesse, Grand Duchy. A Military Medical Cross 1870/71

(Militär-Sanitätskreuz 1870/71). Instituted 25 August 1870 by Grand Duke Ludwig III. (1870-1876 issue). Constructed of gilded bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of a Lilies Cross, the obverse with an inscription of “FÜR PFLEGE DER SOLDATEN 1870” (“FOR THE CARE OF SOLDIERS 1870”), the reverse with an inscription of “DEN 25TEN AUGUST 1870” around a central monogram of Grand Duke Ludwig III, measuring 43.09 mm (w) x 47.24 mm (h), weighing 16.2 grams, in extremely fine condition.
