1831-1918 Issue. An extremely well preserved example of a skillfully crafted 1831-1918 issue Ludwig Order Commander’s Cross (Ludwigorden Kammandeurkreuz); a gold Maltese cross with red, white, and black enamels; hollow construction; the arms of the cross enameled with red enamels on the outer layer, and black enamels on the inner layer; with a fine quality red enameled central medallion bearing a gold “L” for “Ludwig” within an open ended laurel wreath, surrounded by a white enameled ring inscribed “Für Verdiesnt” (For Merit) in gold capital lettering; the reverse with similarly constructed arms, with a black enameled central medallion inscribed “Gott, Ehre, Vaterland” (German - God, Honour, Fatherland), surrounded by a white enameled ring bearing an open ended wreath of laurel and oak leaves; suspended from a gold swivel crown suspension, from a loop and a broad ring; with its period original full length ribbon; measuring 55.48 mm (w) x 86.46 mm (w); light contact marks on the enamels, but free of chips or cracks of any kind, but with light tarnishing of the gold from age; in overall near mint condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
