Hesse, Grand Duchy. A Medal of Merit for Art and Science
(Verdienstmedaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft). Instituted 4 June 1904 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig. (1904-1918 issue). Constructed of silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with two seated figures, above a description of “Kunst u. Wissenschaft” (“Art and Science”) and a stylized owl, the reverse with a central monogram of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig above an inscription of “Dem Verdienst” (“For Merit”), inside of a laurel wreath and topped by a royal crown, circumscribed by an inscription of “Viele sind berufen aber wenige sind auserwählet” (“Many are called but few are chosen”), unmarked, measuring 38.97 mm (w) x 44.34 mm (h), weighing 26.9 grams (inclusive of ribbon), in near extremely fine condition.
