(Orden Philipps des Großmüthigen Bruststern zum Komturkreuz). Instituted on 1 May 1840 by Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse. 1881-1918 Issue. A Maltese cross in Gold with finely executed white enameling, obverse centre medallion featuring a Gold leftward facing bust of Philip the Magnanimous surrounded by a ring of white enamels, inscribed “Si Deus Nobiscum Quis Contra Nos” (Latin - If God be for us who can be against us), reverse centre presenting a crowned Hessen Lion with sword on a blue enameled field, with enameled surround presenting the institution date, measuring 48.2 mm (w) x 53 mm (h - inclusive of suspension ring), with Gold elongated supension loop, section of mid 20th century neck ribbon, with overall light enamel wear, cracking to reverse centre enamels, remains very fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
