Hesse-Darmstadt, Grand Duchy. An Order of Philip the Magnanimous, Commander’s Cross in Gold
(Orden Philipps des Großmütigen, Komturkreuz in Gold). Instituted 1 May 1840 by Grand Duke Ludwig II. (1849-1918 issue). An exquisite example of a Commander’s Cross of the Order of Philip the Magnanimous, constructed of Gold with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a Cross Pattée with a Gold frame and white enameled arms, the obverse with a central blue enameled medallion bearing a leftward-facing Gold profile of Langrave Philip I (“the Magnanimous”), within a white enameled ring bearing a gilt inscription of “SI DEUS NOBISCUM QUIS CONTRA NOS?” (“IF GOD IS WITH US, WHO COULD BE AGAINST US”), the reverse with a central blue enameled medallion bearing a Gold and multi-coloured Hessian lion rampant, within a white enameled ring bearing a gilt inscription of “LUDOVICUS II. MAGN. DUX HESSIAE INSTIT” (“INSTITUTED BY LUDWIG II, GRAND DUKE OF HESSE”), the twelve o’clock arm with an integral loop connecting to a ribbed and elongated suspension ring, unmarked, measuring 49.78 mm (w) x 54.66 mm (h), weighing 21.0 grams, with minor flecking of enamels evident, in overall extremely fine condition.
