Type I. Civil Division. Instituted 1858. A well made set consisting of a Gold badge of the order in white enamels featuring eight points, each with Gold ball finial, obverse centre applique bears the Gold letter "A" in Gothic script crowned by an imperial crown, with blue enamel surround depicting laurels and motto "Virtute" is inscribed in Gold lettering, reverse centre applique presents the dates "1292" (the year that Adolf of Nassau-Weilburgwas crowned as King of the Romans) and "1858" (order institution date by Adolphe, Duke of Nassau), cross in adorned by large imperial crown in Gold, measuring 65 mm (w) x 102 mm (h - inclusive of crown with pierced ball suspension adorned by cross), weighing 54.0 grams, with original silk sash, near mint. Accompanied by the star of the order in silver with eight mulit rayed arms, obverse centre applique in Gold with hand filed beaded surrounds with interior in blue and white enamels, centre presenting Gold letter "A" in Gothic script crowned by an imperial crown, margin with Gold laurels and motto "Virtute" is inscribed in Gold lettering, reverse with pin assembly, marked C.M. Weishaupt & Sohne, measuring 76 mm (w) x 77 mm (h), toned silver, extremely fine.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
