Westphalia, Kingdom. An Order of St. Phillip of the Lion of Limburg in Gold, Knight’s Cross, c.1840
(Orden Sankt Phillipps zum Löwen). Instituted in 1700 by the Counts of Limburg Stirum. A finely made and early award, in Gold, featuring a white enameled Maltese cross with ball finials, with fine quality green enameled laurel wreaths in each quadrant, obverse centre bearing the Lion of Limburg, circumscribed “Beneficencia Et Virtute” (With the Benefit of Virtue) in Gold lettering, the arms of the cross are inscribed with the letters “HSCW” for “Henricus, Sigismunds, Carolus, Wenzeslaus", reverse with an additional blue enamelled centre medallion inscribed “Bene merentibus” (Requite); with a fleur de lis horizontally pierced round loop suspension, measuring 26.60 mm (w) x 30.80 mm (h), 6.9 grams, with enamel loss due to heat on reverse centre, otherwise very fine.
