Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Grand Duchy. An Order of the Griffin, Commander Cross, c.1916
(Greifenorden, Kreuz der Komtur). Instituted 15 September 1885 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV and Adolf Friedrich V. (1884-1918 issue). Constructed of gilded silver with enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with red enameled arms, the obverse with a central medallion bearing a raised Mecklenburg griffin, the twelve o’clock arm with a pebbled suspension connecting to a ring with a suspension loop and period original full-length neck ribbon, unmarked, measuring 60.82 mm (w) x 65.05 mm (h), weighing 48.7 grams, with loss of gilt evident to the cross, in overall extremely fine condition.
