Prussia, Kingdom. A 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß Enlisted Personnel Pickelhaube, Named
(Preußen Pickelhaube für Mannschaften der 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß). A well-preserved 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß (1st Foot Guards) Enlisted personnel Pickelhaube, constructed of a boiled and blackened leather shell. Situated atop the crown is a magnetic metal spike perforated around the neck with ventilation holes, and which is secured in place with a baseplate featuring four rivets. A bar of identical construction emanates from the back of the baseplate and extends down to a boiled and blackened leather neck guard. Riveted to the peak is an insignia consisting of a silvered brass plate in the form of a Prussian imperial eagle clutching a sword and sceptre, overlaid by a banner bearing an inscription of “FÜR KOENIG UND VATERLAND” (“FOR KING AND FATHERLAND”), and pinned with a central eight-pointed starburst overlaid by a Prussian imperial eagle circumscribed by an inscription of “SUUM CUIQUE” (“TO EACH HIS OWN”). The plate measures 16 cm (w) x 9.5 cm (h) overall. It is flanked by magnetic metal studs which secure in place a black leather chinstrap, adjusted with functional dual non-magnetic metal buckles. Situated beneath the studs are magnetic metal cockades, with the left side painted in a black and white Prussian colour scheme, while the right side is painted in an Imperial black, white, and red motif. Completing the exterior features is a protruding boiled and blackened leather visor, reinforced along the rim with a magnetic metal bar. The interior retains a partially-intact brown leather liner. It is unmarked with the exception of a hand-etched owner’s name of “R. SONNEMANN” visible on the reverse of the visor. The Pickelhaube measures approximately 17.5 cm (w) x 24.5 cm (l) x 20.5 cm (h) (inclusive of spike). Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include material fatigue to the shell and other leather elements, as well as some distortion of the shell’s structure. It is in an overall very fine condition.
