Prussia, Kingdom. An Order of the Red Eagle, Grand Cross with Oak Leaves, by Wagner & Sohn
(Roter Adler Orden, Großkreuz mit Eichenlaub). Instituted 12 June 1792 by King Friedrich Wilhelm II. (1861-1918 Issue). In silver gilt, consisting of a Maltese Cross with white enameled arms, the obverse with a central medallion bearing a raised gilt monogram of Friedrich Wilhelm II on a pebbled background, surrounded by a blue enameled ring bearing a gilt inscription of “SINCERE ET CONSTANTER” (“SINCERE AND STEADFASTLY”), the reverse bearing an analogous gilt medallion with a raised institution date of “DEN 18. OCTBR. 1861”, inside of a laurel and oak wreath, the quadrants of the cross joined by finely-detailed red enameled Prussian imperial eagles, the twelve o’clock arm with an integral loop connecting to a suspension ring adorned with three stylized oak leaves, the six o’clock arm maker marked “W” for the firm of Wagner & Sohn, Berlin, along with a silver content mark of “938”, measuring 82.52 mm (w) x 82.71 mm (h), weighing 66.8 grams, the oak leaf adornment measuring 19.82 mm (w) x 19.05 mm (h) and weighing 3.8 grams, accompanied by its period original sash ribbon, measuring 880 mm in length, very minor flecking of enamels evident, a rare example in extremely fine condition.
