(Roter Adler-Orden Kreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern). Instituted 12 June 1792. Type IV. (1854-1918 Issue). A gilded silver cross pattée with white-enamelled arms, the obverse centre presents a white enamelled medallion depicting a Brandenburg crowned eagle, the reverse centre engraved with a crowned cipher of King Friedrich Wilhelm III, hallmarked 938 on bottom of the six o’clock arm, hallmarked 800 on flat loop, partially stamped W on bottom of six o’clock arm denoting manufacture by Wagner, measuring 47.39 mm (w) x 52.83 mm (h), on flat loop for suspension from period original neck ribbon, and in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Seven awarded between 1854 and 1864, forty-one awarded in 1866, and 516 awarded between 1914 and 1918.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
