A gold Maltese cross with green enameled arms with red enameled parallelograms between the arms of the cross with white enameled fleur-de-lis finals; the obverse with a large leftward facing white enameled falcon superimposed in the center; the reverse with a central gilt applique with bright blue enamels, inscribed “Vigilando Ascendimus” (Latin - We rise through watchfulness), with white enameled arms and with green enameled parallelograms between the arms of the cross with white enameled fleur-de-lis finals; suspended from a hollow swivel crown suspension, with a horizontally pierced ball and loop for suspension from its faded period original ribbon; measuring 34.34 mm (w) x 56.97 mm (h); weighing 17.8 grams; in virtually mint condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
