Saxony. An Albrecht Order, II Class Knight with Swords, by G.A. Scharffenberg
(Albrechtsorden Ritterkreuz 2. Klasse, mit Schwertern). Instituted 1850 by King Friedrich August II of Saxony. Type II. (1890-1918 Issue). A fine silver gilt award featuring a white enamelled Latin Cross, with silver gilt swords in each quadrant, obverse presenting with a central medallion composed of a gilt relief of Duke Albrecht III of Saxony inside a blue enamelled ring bearing the Order’s motto of ALBERTUS ANIMOSUS (ALBERT THE MERCIFUL), reverse with a central medallion composed of a crowned royal coat of arms in silver gilt and enamels, surrounded by a blue enamelled ring bearing the Order’s institution date of 1850, marked on edges of the cross arms with SCHARFFENBERG DRESDEN S, measuring 34.32 mm (w) x 46.96 mm (w), weighing 19.2 grams, presenting loss of enamel around the obverse blue ring, on loop for suspension from period original green and white ribbon, and in overall very fine condition, accompanied by the hard-shelled case of issue, embossed on lid with A.R. 2., with recessed medal bed, two Dresden-based maker labels affixed to the bottom, measuring 58 mm (w) x 79 mm (l) x 21 mm (h), and in near very fine condition.
