1870-1918 Issue. (Orden der Württembergischen Krone Bruststern zum Großkreuz mit Schwertern). A silver eight-pointed star with crossed gold swords (with an old gold test); the obverse with a pebbled center field with a gold Maltese cross with white enamels, featuring a central Gold Württemberg crown, surrounded by a red ring of enamels, with gold lions between the arms of the cross, surrounded by a broad red ring of enamels, inscribed “Furchtlos un Trew” (German - Fearless and Loyal) in gold lettering; the reverse plain, with a vertical pinback and a functional hinge/catch assembly; maker marked “Eduard Foer, Königlicher Hofjuwelier, Stuttgart” on the reverse; measuring 82.97 mm (w) x 81.81 mm (h); weighing 71.8 grams; the central applique bearing the Maltese cross slightly caved in towards the upper right side, with the right tip of the six o’clock arm broken off, along with chipping to the red enamels; in overall fine condition. Rare.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
