Germany, Heer. An Artillery/Assault Gun Crewman’s Field Jacket

(Panzerjacke für Männer der Artillerie/Sturmgeschütze). An exceptionally well-preserved Heer Artillery/Assault Gun crewman’s field jacket, constructed of smooth field-grey wool. It features a wide turned-down collar transitioning into double-breasted flaps, and is flanked on each side by tabs. The latter are constructed of a field-grey wool base, trimmed along the outer edge with red piping, and bear insignia consisting of a silver-grey rayon backer overlaid by machine-embroidered dark green tresses. Each collar tab measures 40 mm (w) x 70 mm (l). The shoulders are adorned with boards constructed of smooth dark green wool with field-grey underlays, trimmed along the exterior edges with red piping. Measuring 50 mm (w) x 95 mm (l), the straps are secured in place with pebbled zink buttons on the inner edge and by integrated loops meeting reverse straps at the outer edge. Both of the buttons are maker marked on the reverse with the logo of Friedrich Linden, Lüdenscheid. Stitched onto the upper left arm is a Gefreiter’s insignia consisting of a triangular dark green wool base bearing a single machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire tresse, measuring 80 mm (w) x 75 mm (h). The cuff of each sleeve features a hidden vertical slit, with an adjustable closure consisting of two bakelite buttons meeting an interior buttonhole. Stitched onto the upper right breast flap is an insignia consisting of a field-grey rayon base bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 100 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). Pinned onto the left breast flap is a ribbon bar featuring two decorations, including a 1939 Iron Cross and an Eastern Front Medal, measuring 30 mm in total length. Also set into the left flap are two vertically-arranged threaded loops securing in place a Black Grade Wound Badge, itself constructed of blackened magnetic metal, measuring 36 mm (w) x 46 mm (h). Maker marked on the reverse with Präsidialkanzlei code “88” for Werner Redo, Saarlautern, the badge demonstrates no wear and is in mint condition. The jacket closes with nine black bakelite buttons of various sizes on the right flap meeting an analogous arrangement of reinforced buttonholes, most of which are hidden within the interior. A partial brown cotton twill liner encompasses the interior of the breast flaps, with a single pocket set into the right flap. Grey rayon drawstrings emanate from each liner, while the left liner is stamped in black ink with size dimensions and a Reichsbetriebsnummer of “0/0250/0496” for an unconfirmed Berlin-based manufacturer. The jacket measures approximately 430 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 525 mm, and an overall body length of 565 mm. Presenting free of notable wear or damage, this jacket is in an overall extremely fine condition.
