Germany, Heer. A General der Infanterie Service Tunic

(General der Infanterie Waffenrock). This is an extremely well-preserved Heer (Army) General der Infanterie (General of the Infantry) service tunic, constructed of smooth field grey wool. The tunic features a collar, constructed of forest green wool, which is flanked by tabs, each constructed of a red wool base bearing a machine-embroidered gold bullion wire insignia, measuring 40 mm (w) x 95 mm (l). The shoulders are adorned by boards, each constructed of a cardboard-reinforced red wool base bearing multiple rows of rolled and twisted silver aluminum and gold bullion wire with two gilded bronze rank pips. The boards measure 40 mm (w) x 95 mm (l), and are secured to the tunic by a row of machine stitching at the outer edge and by a gilded, pebbled, magnetic metal button on the inner edge. The upper left arm bears an insignia in the form of a machine-embroidered, multi-coloured edelweiss, measuring 55 mm (w) x 70 mm (h), indicating that the wearer was part of the Gebirgsjäger (Mountain Troops). The cuffs of each sleeve are rolled up to a depth of 150 mm and are held in place by two pieces of machine stitching. Adorning the upper left breast is an Wehrmacht officer’s insignia presenting as a machine-embroidered gold bullion wire German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle is set on a forest green wool patch and measures 95 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). Each breast bears two pockets opening with stylized horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes meeting gilded, pebbled, magnetic metal buttons. Above the upper left breast pocket are seven horizontally-arranged thread loops, while the pocket itself has two vertically-arranged thread loops, accommodating decorations with horizontal and vertical pinbacks. The tunic is closed with six gilded, pebbled, magnetic metal buttons on the right breast flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left. The interior features a complete field-grey rayon liner with a high sheen, transitioning into a pinstripe design through the arms. There is a single interior pocket, located at the upper left breast, as well as a small slit connecting to the lower left breast exterior pocket. The interior of the collar features three magnetic metal buttons, as well as two magnetic metal hooks on the right meeting an equal number of loops on the left, facilitating a flush fit with the wearer’s neck. The tunic is unmarked and measures approximately 455 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 625 mm and an overall body length of 740 mm. With the exception of some minor soiling and fatigue of the exterior wool, the tunic is in a near extremely fine condition.
