Germany, Heer. An Army Infantry Feldwebel’s Dress Tunic
(Heer Feldwebel Waffenrock). This is an extremely well-preserved Heer (Army) Feldwebel’s dress tunic, constructed of smooth field-grey wool. The collar, constructed of forest green wool, is trimmed from end-to-end with a machine-embroidered, silver aluminum wire tresse with white borders. The collar is also flanked by tabs, constructed of a white wool base, bearing dual, machine-embroidered, silver aluminum wire insignia, each measuring 35 mm (w) x 75 mm (l). The shoulders are adorned by straps, constructed of forest green wool, trimmed with a silver aluminum wire tresse and white piping, each topped by a single silvered bronze rank pip and number “17”. The straps each measure 45 mm (w) x 100 mm (l), and are secured to the tunic by stitching at the outer edge and by a pebbled, silvered magnetic metal button on the interior. The cuffs of each sleeve are rolled up to a depth of 150 mm and are securely held in place by two pieces of machine stitching. The right breast flap bears an insignia in the form of a Wehrmacht-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, constructed of machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire on a forest green wool backer, measuring 100 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). The upper left breast flap has two horizontally-arranged thread loops to accommodate a decoration with a horizontal pinback. Each breast of the tunic bears two pockets, opening with a stylized horizontal flap bearing a reinforced buttonhole meeting a pebbled, silvered, magnetic metal button on the tunic. The tunic is closed with six pebbled, silvered, magnetic metal buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left. The exterior features are completed with two reverse belt loops, similarly constructed of pebbled, silvered, magnetic metal. All buttons are marked on the reverse with the logo of maker F.W. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid. The latter is also trimmed with a band of white piping. The interior is fully lined with field-grey cotton, which transitions into a pinstripe design through the arms. Each armpit bears two dark grey rayon loops, while the interior of the collar has three magnetic metal butterfly-style clips, along with two magnetic metal hooks on the right meeting an equal number of loops of identical construction on the left. The tunic is unmarked and measures approximately 410 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 596 mm and an overall body length of 690 mm. There is some minor soiling evident to the exterior of the tunic, but it is in an otherwise extremely fine condition.
