Germany, Luftwaffe. A Flight Personnel Oberleutnant Service Tunic

(Luftwaffe Oberleutnant Waffenrock). This is a very well-preserved Luftwaffe Flight Personnel Oberleutnant service tunic, constructed of smooth dark grey wool. The tunic features an integrated collar fully trimmed with twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire piping. It is flanked on each side by tabs constructed of golden-yellow wool with buckram cores. Each measuring 40 mm (w) x 60 mm (l), the tabs are trimmed with twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire piping and bear hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire insignia. The shoulders are adorned with boards constructed of cardboard-reinforced golden-yellow wool, bearing four bands of silver aluminum wire piping, and pinned with silvered bronze rank pips. Each board measures 32 mm (w) x 105 mm (l) and is secured in place by machine stitching at the outer edge and by a pebbled magnetic metal button on the inner edge. The cuff of each sleeve is rolled up to a depth of 125 mm and is held in place by two pieces of machine stitching. Each breast flap bears two pockets, opening with reinforced horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes meeting pebbled magnetic metal buttons. Stitched onto the tunic above the upper right breast flap is an insignia consisting of a dark grey wool backer bearing a machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika. The insignia measures 80 mm (w) x 50 mm (h). The upper left breast pocket is surrounded by three sets of vertically-arranged threaded loops, as well as a single set of horizontally-arranged threaded loops, for the accommodation of decorations with vertical and horizontal pinbacks, respectively. An additional single set of vertical threaded loops also appears on the upper left pocket. The tunic closes with an arrangement of four pebbled magnetic metal buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. A ribbon for a 1939 Iron Cross II Class is set through the upper buttonhole and stitched at both ends to the interior of the tunic. The interior features a dark grey rayon liner which transitions to a pinstripe design through the arms. A single interior pocket is located at the upper left breast flap, opening with a reinforced horizontal slit, with an additional opening at the lower portion of the flag for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. The interior features complete with a suspension loop set into the collar. The tunic is fully unmarked and measures 495 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 555 mm and an overall body length of 720 mm. Moderate soiling is evident to the exterior wool and interior liner, with sporadic patches of material fatigue also apparent. Additionally, the lower left breast pocket button has been replaced with a period correct non-magnetic button. The tunic is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
