Germany, SS. A Rare 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen Scharführer’s Assault Gun Wrapper
(Waffen-SS Feldgraue Sturmgeschützjacke für einen Scharführer der 7. SS-Freiwilligen Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen"). A rare and extremely well-preserved Waffen-SS assault gun wrapper, constructed of field-grey wool. It features a turned-down collar transitioning into double breast lapels, which is flanked by tabs, both constructed of black wool with buckram cores and measuring 40 mm (w) x 55 mm (l). The right side bears the machine-embroidered silver-grey Odal rune of the 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen, while the right side is pinned with a single silvered pip and bears a silver aluminum wire tresses bisected by a black embroidered band, indicating a rank of Scharführer. The shoulders are flanked by straps constructed of black wool with field-grey underlays, trimmed with red piping, bordered by silver aluminum wire tresses, pinned with numerals “7”, and are wrapped with additional silver aluminum wire loops indicating Officer candidacy. Each measuring 45 mm (w) x 105 mm (l), the straps are secured in place with pebbled buttons on the inner edge and with loops at the outer edge. The cuff of each sleeve features a hidden vertical slit, closing with two black bakelite buttons for an adjustable fit. Stitched onto the upper right sleeve is an SS Gebirgsjäger insignia, consisting of a black wool base bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey edelweiss with a golden-yellow stamen, set within a silver-grey border, measuring 60 mm (w) x 75 mm (h). Affixed to the upper right sleeve with factory-original zig-zag stitching is an insignia consisting of a black wool base bearing a machine-embroidered, silver-grey, SS-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 90 mm (w) x 40 mm (h) overall. Stitched onto the left cuff is a title consisting of a ribbed black rayon base, trimmed along both edges with silver aluminum wire tresses, and bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey inscription of “PRINZ EUGEN”. The cuff title measures 28 mm in width. Stitched onto the left breast flap is an SS member insignia consisting of a field-grey wool base bearing machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire Sig runes, measuring 35 mm (w) x 36 mm (h). Three sets of threaded loops are stitched in place just above the insignia for the accommodation of decorations, with the uppermost loops arranged horizontally, allowing for the attachment of a Close Combat Clasp or ribbon bar. Nine bakelite buttons are stitched onto the right breast, meeting an equal number of partially-hidden buttonholes. Stitched through the top buttonholes is a 1939 Iron Cross II Class ribbon. A slate-grey herringbone twill (HBT) liner partially encompasses the interior. It features straps with reinforced eyelets for the addition of a belt hanger, and has additional straps with buttonholes. Size dimensions are stamped onto the left flap in black ink. Otherwise unmarked, the wrapper measures approximately 42.5 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 54 cm, and an overall body length of 52 cm when folded on a flat surface. Demonstrating no notable damage or wear, this scarce wrapper belonging to a member of a storied unit with extensive anti-Partisan service is in an extremely fine condition.
