Germany, Wehrmacht. A Field Division Camouflage Smock
(Luftwaffe Felddivision-Tarnhemd). A wartime-used Luftwaffe Field Division smock, constructed of a weather-hardened cotton duck material. The exterior is dyed in a classic Sumpftarnmuster (marsh/water pattern) camouflage with a mottle consisting of a primarily light brown base overlaid by irregular splotches of dark green and brown, overlaid by green splinters, with extensive fading giving the brown patches a pink or rust-coloured appearance. It features a turned-down collar which transitions into double lapels. Each cuff has a vertical slit which closes with functional snap buttons. Large pockets are set into the lower half of each breast flap, both closing with reinforced buttonholes meeting zink buttons. The smock itself closes with three slate-grey bakelite buttons on the right flap meeting four reinforced buttonholes on the left (which the uppermost button lost to time). A ventilation hole is set into each armpit, with additional belt hanger eyelets flanking each side. The interior is plain and features a single pocket set into the upper left breast, closing with a zink button. Stamped onto the pocket in black ink is a Reichsbetriebsnummer (RBNr.) of “250207” for an unconfirmed Berlin-based manufacturer, topped by size dimensions. Demonstrating the unmistakable characteristics of wartime field use, the smock shows fading throughout the camouflage pattern, material fatigue around seams and high-contact points, oxidation of the metal snap buttons, and minor soiling. It remains in an overall very fine condition.
