Germany, Wehrmacht. A Pair of Afrika Korps Personnel Corduroy Breeches, by M. Neumann
(Wehrmacht Afrikakorps Tropenhose für Mannschaften). An extremely well-preserved pair of Afrika Korps corduroy breeches, constructed of an olive-drab cotton blend. The waistband features an integrated belt consisting of a khaki-coloured woven cotton strap on the right side meeting a magnetic metal buckle set into the left. A French fly consisting of six original magnetic metal buttons meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes closes the breeches, with all buttons covered by flaps when closed. The breeches feature dual side pockets, each opening with a reinforced diagonal slit at the upper front thighs, with a single reverse pocket closing with a magnetic metal button. There is an additional reinforced horizontal slit at the upper right thigh adjacent to the side pocket, topped by a magnetic metal ring stitched onto the base material. A further layer of olive-drab corduroy material is stitched onto the breeches throughout the interior of the thighs for friction protection. The ankle and calf area of both legs feature vertical slits with ten sets of dual reinforced eyelets through which is looped a period original drawstring, allowing for an adjustable fit with the wearer’s boots. The interior features a partial white cotton liner through the waistband, which also comprises the interior of the pockets. Two corduroy straps, secured in place with magnetic metal buttons, are set into the waistband for the accommodation of suspenders. An integrated cotton loop emanates from the liner just underneath the suspender loops, allowing the breeches to be hung when not in use. The interior presents plain with the exception of a maker’s mark of “M. NEUMANN, WIEN”, size dimensions of “78, 111, 80, 96”, and a manufacture date of “1943”, indicating the breeches are among the final pieces produced for the Afrika Korps. They measure approximately 410 mm across the waist, with an inseam of 330 mm and an overall length of 990 mm. With only minor signs of material fatigue, the breeches are in an overall extremely fine condition.
