Germany, Luftwaffe. A Flying Personnel Leutnant’s Leather Flight Jacket
(Lederjacke für Leutnant der Fliegertruppe). A well-preserved Luftwaffe Flying Personnel Leutnant’s leather flight jacket, constructed of a heavy dark brown leather shell. It features a low-set collar which transitions into double breast lapels. The shoulders are flanked by boards constructed of cardboard-reinforced golden-yellow wool and topped by four bands of silver aluminum wire piping. Measuring 32 mm (w) x 110 mm (l), the boards are secured in place with pebbled aluminum buttons on the inner edge and on the outer edge with integral loops meeting reverse straps set onto the boards themselves. Each sleeve features an integral strap with a reinforced buttonhole meeting two wooden buttons for a fully adjustable fit. The breast flaps both feature a single pocket, both opening with horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes meeting wooden buttons. Stitched onto the jacket just above the right pocket is an insignia consisting of a dark grey rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 94 mm (w) x 60 mm (h). Two sets of vertically-arranged threaded loops are set on top of the left pocket for the accommodation of decorations with vertical pinbacks, while two horizontally-arranged loops are set above the same pocket. The jacket closes with seven wooden buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap, while six buttons on the left arm also meet an analogous seven reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. Completing the exterior features are two integral belts set into each side of the waistband, both adjusted with functional magnetic metal buckles. The interior is fully lined with thick white fleece which continues through each sleeve. It measures approximately 465 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 590 mm, and an overall body length of 600 mm. In addition to one missing button on the left breast flap, there is moderate, age-appropriate material fatigue evident to the leather, with minor wear to the interior fleece. It is in an overall better than very fine condition.
