Germany, SS. A 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Italian) Panzerjäger Hauptscharführer’s Tunic

(Waffenrock für Hauptscharführer der 29. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (italienische Nr. 1)). A rare and well-preserved Hauptscharführer’s service tunic from the 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Italian), constructed of field-grey Italian wool twill. The tunic features an integrated collar flanked on each side by tabs, each constructed of a black wool base with a buckram core and trimmed with twisted and rolled silver-grey threaded piping. The right tab bears machine-embroidered silver-grey double Sig runes, while the left tab is pinned with two silvered zink rank pips and bears a single machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire tresse, in turn bisected by a black threaded band. Each tab measures 40 mm (w) x 60 mm (l). The shoulders are flanked on each side by straps constructed of black wool, trimmed with rose-pink piping, bordered by a silver aluminum wire tresses, and pinned with two zink rank pips and a Panzerjäger (Tank Hunter) cypher. Both straps measure 48 mm (w) x 100 mm (l) and are secured to the tunic by machine stitching at the outer edge and by a pebbled magnetic metal button on the inner edge. Stitched onto the left arm is an insignia in the form of an Italian-style Waffen-SS eagle clutching a fasces, constructed of a black wool backer with silver-grey machine-embroidery and measuring 90 mm (w) x 45 mm (h). The cuff of each sleeve is pleated and securely held in place by a row of machine stitching. Each breast flap features two pockets, all opening with reinforced horizontal flaps bearing reinforced buttonholes meeting pebbled magnetic metal buttons. Set into the upper left pocket are dual black-threaded loops in a vertical arrangement, accommodating the attachment of a decoration with a vertical pinback. The tunic closes with three pebbled magnetic metal buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap, with an additional small bakelite button on the upper right flap similarly meeting an analogous buttonhole for optional flush closure. It also features dual hidden side pockets, opening on each side with a vertical slit and bakelite button. The interior is fully encompassed by a grey rayon herringbone liner, consisting of multiple pieces secured together with machine stitching. It features two pockets, both set into the right flap, with a large pocket opening with a horizontal flap on the upper flap and a small narrow pocket on the lower flap. It is unmarked with the exception of a black ink number “3” on the back. The tunic measures approximately 480 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 610 mm and an overall body length of 770 mm. It displays some issues consistent with age and field use, including some mothing and tearing near the left armpit, soiling and material fatigue of the interior liner, and the loss of a button to one of the interior pockets. The tunic is in an overall better than very fine condition.
