Germany, SS. A Late-War Waffen-SS Assault Gun Tunic
(Waffen-SS Sturmgeschützjacke). A well-preserved, late-war Waffen-SS assault gun tunic, constructed of coarse field-grey wool. It features a turned-down collar, flanked on each side by the machine-stitching outlines of tabs which have been lost to time, which transitions into double breast lapels. The shoulders are flanked by integral loops and pebbled zink buttons for the accommodation of straps. The upper left sleeve demonstrates the machine-stitched outline of an SS eagle insignia which has similarly been removed from the tunic. Each cuff has a vertical slit which closes with two black bakelite buttons for an adjustable fit. It closes with nine black bakelite buttons on the right breast, with both large- and small-sized examples, meeting hidden buttonholes on the left side. The interior is partially encompassed by a multi-piece light and dark grey liner, with the left side stamped in black ink with a code of “392” and a manufacture date of “43”, just above size dimensions. It measures approximately 47 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 53 cm, and an overall body length of 58 cm. In addition to the missing insignia, several holes, possibly consistent with mothing, are visible between two of the buttons on the right breast, and other spots of minor material fatigue consistent with wartime use are visible elsewhere. The tunic remains in a very fine condition.
