Germany, Federal Republic. A German Cross in Gold, Postwar Veteran’s Replacement Example with Case, by Steinhauer & Lück
(Deutsches Kreuz in Gold). Constructed of gilded and patinated tombak with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of a double-overlaid radiant starburst pattern, with a central silvered disc bearing a black enameled mobile swastika, within a circular laurel leaf wreath wrapped in ribbon, joined together at the bottom by a plaque bearing a date of “1941”, surrounded on both sides by red enameled rings, the reverse with four visible rivets securing the obverse features in place, with a barrel hinge and banjo-style pinback meeting a flat wire catch, unmarked but with the physical characteristics of a postwar veteran’s replacement example most commonly credited to Steinhauer & Lück, Lüdenscheid, measuring 63.57 mm (w) x 63.35 mm (h), weighing 51.4 grams, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a light wooden frame with a faux black leather exterior liner, the interior with a white rayon lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a slotted black velvet medal bed, unmarked, measuring 105 mm (w) x 105 mm (l) x 25 mm (h), in near extremely fine condition.
