(Goldenes Ehrenzeichen der NSDAP). Constructed of gilded tombak with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of a circular oak leaf wreath, with a central black enameled mobile swastika on a white enameled disc, within a red enameled ring bearing an inscription of “NATIONAL-SOZIALISTISCHE D.A.P.” (“NATIONAL SOCIALIST GERMAN WORKERS’ PARTY”), the reverse with a horizontal pinback, stamped with a NSDAP membership number of “66688” for Friedrich Volkmann, maker marked “JOS. FUESS, MÜNCHEN”, measuring 24.16 mm in diameter, weighing 8.1 grams, some flecking of the enamels is evident, with a large spot visible to the second “A” of “NATIONAL”, in overall near extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Friedrich Volkmann was born on 23 July 1896 in Klonadau, Posen (present-day Poznań district, Poland). Employed as a mining official while a resident of Essen, he joined the NSDAP on 25 August 1927. He was initially awarded the small Golden Party Badge on 21 March 1934, but records indicate that Volkmann lost the decoration in January 1940. He was issued a replacement, which is the example offered, at a cost of 1 Reichsmark. The document also indicates that Volkmann’s loss of his first badge has been noted in his NSDAP membership record.
