A rare functional example of a Wehrmacht-issue Record Watch Co. service watch. This Record Watch Co. Dienstuhr wristwatch was manufactured as a subsidiary of Longines during the early 1930’s, and although it exhibits some obvious signs of wear, it is generally well preserved. The case of the watch is manufactured of nickel-plated brass, with a nickel-plated crown that is original to the watch. The lugs of this watch are that of the solid type, and are non-drilled, with non-removable lug bars. The screw-bottom case-back is crafted of steel and is marked as such with “Stahlboden” (Steel bottom), and is also stamped “D429810H”, with the “D” and “H” standing for “Deutsches Heer”. The face of the watch is matte black, with printed arabic numerals from 1 to 12, with white hands and an additional 60 second dial with a silver second-hand at the 6 o’clock position. The Arabic numerals were once luminous (coated with radion) to be visible in the dark, but have long faded. Each minute position is marked on the dial with thin lines, with each second in the second dial has a tick for each elapsed second, with slightly longer ticks every 5 second intervals, and a numeral associated to every tenth of a minute. The face is covered by a period original acrylic domed crystal. The watch case measures 34 mm in diameter without the crown, 36 mm with the crown, 12 mm thick, and 18 mm wide lugs. The watch comes with a period original brown/burgundy leather strap, marked “Grant” in black marker on the reverse. The case, crown, and crystal depict expected signs of wear with the addition of scratches on the reverse from use. Overall in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The watch currently winds as it should, and runs undisrupted, however, as the service history of this antique timepiece is unknown, it is recommended that the watch is serviced prior to being fully wound or worn. Water resistance on this watch is unknown.
