Germany, Third Reich. A Commemorative Silver Pocket Watch, with Case, for 40 Years of Copper Mining to Robert Besser
(Kupferschieferbergbau Erinnerungs-Taschenuhr mit Etui). A rare and dedicated pocket watch named to Robert Besser for 40 years of service to copper mining in Mansfeld, constructed of a silver casing, the obverse featuring a glass face with a white 12-hour clock graded at intervals of five, with an additional 60-second face at the bottom, featuring hour and minute hands, the reverse bearing an extremely detailed depiction of two copper miners around a mobile swastika and coat of arms, circumscribed by an inscription of “FÜR 40 JAHRIGE TREUE MITARBEIT MANSFELDSCHER KUPFERSCHIEFERBERGBAU” (“FOR 40 YEARS OF LOYAL SERVICE TO THE MANSFELD COPPER MINE”), topped by a ribbed wind-up mechanism, the reverse opening to reveal an engraved dedication to “ROBERT BESSER 1897-1937”), with a silver content number of “0,900” and a crown and crescent moon indicating German manufacture, measuring 52 mm in overall diameter, accompanied by a non-magnetic metal chain with a spring clip and a fob consisting of a rayon-blended ribbon with silver fixtures with a content mark of “800”, also accompanied by its original presentation case, constructed of a wooden frame with a faux brown leather exterior liner, the interior with a white rayon lid liner and partially-intact hinge cover, with a slotted white velvet bed, opening with a functional spring catch with exterior stud release and a functional metal hinge, unmarked, measuring 85 mm (w) x 105 mm (l) x 26 mm (h), the arm of the 60-second stopwatch has detached and is loose inside the face and the functionality of the watch has not been determined, in overall near extremely fine condition.
