Germany, Wehrmacht. An Iron Cross 1939 I Class in its Case of Issue
An “Eisernes Kreuz 1939 1. Klasse”; white metal cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a white metal ribbed border; the obverse with a raised central mobile swastika with the re-institution date “1939” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse plain, with a vertical slender banjo-style pin, a barrel hinge, and a flat wire catch; unmarked; measuring 44.11 mm x 44.20 mm; weighing 18.8 grams. Accompanied by its original case of issue; constructed of heavy pressed paper with a black faux leather (leatherette) exterior; the outside of the lid embossed with an outline of a cross pattée in silver; lined interior lid with a slot in the bed for metal seating; functional spring catch with stud release; intact interior fabric hinge cover; functional external metal hinge; measuring 67 mm x 67 mm; near mint condition with attractive old patina.
