An Iron Cross 1939 Second Class with Award Certificate to Sailor Onboard Destroyer Z-23
An “Eisernes Kreuz 1939 2. Klasse”; white metal cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a white metal ribbed border; on loop for suspension; with its period original full-length ribbon; the obverse with a raised central mobile swastika with the re-institution date “1939” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse with the original institution date “1813” in raised numbering on the lower arm; measuring 44.42 mm x 44.29 mm; weighing 19.5 grams; with some bubbling in the paint evident on the centre of the cross, in overall near extremely fine condition. Accompanied by its award certificate to Matrosenobergefreiten/Leading Seaman on board the Commander Destroyer Z-23. The certificate was issued onboard the ship on February 8, 1944, and bears the signature of Rear Admiral Leo Kreisch, as well as the official seal of the Leader of the Destroyers of the Kriegsmarine. The document measures 200 mm x 140 mm, with two folds, but otherwise near mint condition. (C: 154)
