Germany, Wehrmacht. A 1939 Iron Cross I Class with Case
(Eisernes Kreuz 1939 I. Klasse). Reinstituted 1 September 1939. (1939-1945 issue). Constructed of iron and silver, consisting of a Cross Pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core inside of a ribbed silver alloy frame, the obverse with a central mobile swastika, with a reinstitution date of “1939” on the six o’clock arm, the reverse with a barrel hinge and banjo-style pinback meeting a flat wire catch, unmarked, measuring 43.94 mm (w) 44.09 mm (h), weighing 17.1 grams, accompanied by its period original case of issue, constructed of card stock with a faux black leather exterior, the obverse lid with a silver embossed outline of a Cross Pattée, the interior with a white satin-type lid liner and intact hinge cover, slotted white doeskin wool medal bed, opening with a functional magnetic metal spring catch with exterior stud release, with a functional magnetic metal hinge unmarked, measuring 68 mm (w) x 65 mm (l) x 25 mm (h), in better than very fine condition.
