Germany, Wehrmacht. A German Cross in Gold, by Deschler & Sohn
(Deutsches Kreuz in Gold). Constructed of gilded and silvered tombak with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of an eight-pointed double-overlaid starburst pattern, bearing a central silvered disc overlaid by black enameled vaulted mobile swastika which sits flush with the base, set within a circular gilded laurel leaf wreath wrapped in ribbon and joined together at the bottom by a plaque bearing a date of “1941”, trimmed along both the inner and outer edges with red enameled rings, the reverse with four visible rivets securing the obverse features in place, with a barrel hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a rounded catch, the pinback maker marked with Präsidialkanzlei code “1” for Deschler & Sohn, Munich, measuring 63.05 mm (w) x 63.58 mm (h), weighing 68.6 grams, significant chipping is visible to the enamels of the swastika and the base metal demonstrates bending to the one o’clock position, in very fine condition.
