Germany, Wehrmacht. A German Cross in Gold, with Case, by Otto Klein
(Deutsches Kreuz in Gold). Instituted 28 September 1941. (1941-1945 issue). Constructed of cupal with gilt and enamels, the obverse consisting of a double-overlaid right-pointed starburst pattern, with a central silvered disc overlaid by a black enameled mobile swastika, within a circular gilt laurel leaf wreath, wrapped in ribbon and joined together at the bottom by a plaque bearing a date of “1941”, the reverse with a barrel hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a rounded catch, with four visible rivets securing the obverse fixtures in place, maker marked with Präsidialkanzlei code “134” for Otto Klein, Hanau, measuring 63.25 mm (w) x 63.12 mm (h), weighing 45.9 grams, with a small fleck visible to the enamel of the six o’clock arm and minor wear to the silvering of the cupal, in overall extremely fine condition, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a wooden frame with a faux black leather exterior liner, the interior with a white rayon lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a slotted black felt medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 105 mm (w) x 105 mm (l) x 30 mm (h), in extremely fine condition.
