(Eisernes Kreuz 1939 I. Klasse). Reinstituted 1 September 1939. (1939-1945). Constructed of iron and silver, consisting of a Cross Pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central mobile swastika, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1939”, the reverse with a crimped wraparound hinge and vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, unmarked but with the physical characteristics of manufacture by Wilhelm Deumer, measuring 43.33 mm (w) x 43.14 mm (h), weighing 14.4 grams, a rare Schinkel-style cross in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The example offered has been attributed to the Deumer firm due to identical frames found on LDO-marked, Imperial-style crosses bearing the company’s code. It is discussed on page 89 of “The Iron Cross I Class”, 2010, by Dietrich Maerz.
