Germany, Third Reich. A Return of Memel Commemorative Medal, with Case
(Medaille zur Erinnerung an die Heimkehr des Memellandes mit Etui). Constructed of bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with two raised figures, one of which is clutching a flag and the other a length of broken chain, above a NSDAP-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, the reverse with an inscription of “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE HEIMKEHR DES MEMELLANDES 22. MÄRZ 1939” (“IN COMMEMORATION OF THE HOMECOMING OF MEMEL 22 MARCH 1939”), within an oak leaf wreath, unmarked, measuring 32.22 mm in diameter, measuring 13.6 grams, with minor oxidation and loss of finish evident, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a card stock frame with a faux red leather exterior line, the lid bearing a gilt Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, the interior with a white satin-type lid liner and a depressed red felt medal bed, opening with a functional spring catch with exterior stud release and a functional metal hinge, unmarked, measuring 50 mm (w) x 102 mm (l) x 20 mm (h), with minor material fatigue evident to the case, in overall near extremely fine condition.
