Germany, Third Reich. A Memel Medal with Case of Issue
(Medaille zur Erinnerung an die Heimkehr des Memellandes). Instituted 1 May 1939. A circular medal constructed of bronze, the obverse bears two nude male figures, one of which holds a flag with a swastika that flies behind them, both are standing on a podium with an eagle holding a wreath with a swastika in the centre, the reverse bears the inscription “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE HEIM KEHR DES MEMELLANDES 22 MARZ 1939” (TO COMMEMORATE THE RETURN OF MEMEL LAND 22 MARCH 1939), measuring 32.22 mm (w) x 36.91 mm (h), with suspension ring on red, white and green striped ribbon, very fine; accompanied with case, constructed of wood with a pebbled red material exterior, lid has a gilt eagle holding awreathed swastika, push button closure, interior lid has a cream colored material and a red medal bed, bottom of exterior tagged “HAUPMUNZAMT WIEN III.”, very fine.
