(Panzerkampfabzeichen in Silver). Instituted on 20.12.1939 by Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch. (Issued 1939-1945). Constructed of silvered zink, the obverse with a border of oak leaves with a tie at the base and a Panzerkampfwagen IV superimposed in the centre on grassy ground, with its left tank track extending over the edge of the badge, the reverse plain with a vertical needle style pin, ball hinge and a round wire catch, maker marked with “AS” initials inside triangle on reverse, measuring 43.24 (w) x 63.17 mm (h) and weighing 25.4 grams, in near very fine condition.
Footnote: As per Philippe de Bock, “The German Panzer Assault Badge of World War II”, Volume One (2009), page 382, the “AS in Triangle” maker mark is incorrectly attributed to A.D. Schwerdt, who did not manufacture this badge. The identity of this maker remains unknown.
