Germany, Wehrmacht. A Black Grade Wound Badge, First Pattern
(Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz). Constructed of blackened brass, the obverse consisting of an oval laurel leaf wreath with scalloped edges, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, with a central raised Stahlhelm overlaid by a mobile swastika, on top of crossed swords on a pebbled field, the reverse with a crimped barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, unmarked, measuring 39.10 mm (w) x 44.45 mm (h), weighing 13.7 grams, demonstrating loss of finish throughout, a scarce type commonly issued to Condor Legion personnel in better than very fine condition.
