A 1938 Grundsteinlegung des Volkswagenwerkes badge (May 1938); in silvered zink, with all of the silvering on the obverse worn off; horizontal pinback; unmarked; measuring 40 mm x 30 mm; near very fine condition.
Footnote: On May 26, 1938, Adolf Hitler laid the cornerstone of the Volkswagen factory in Fallerselben, which was to produce the VW Beetle “Kraft durch Freude Wagen/Strength through Joy car”. The factory only built a handful of cars by the start of the war, but was re-tooled to produce the Type 82 Kübelwagen (52,000 built) and the amphibious Type 166 Schwimmwagen (14,000) before the end of the war.
