Germany, Heer. A Commemorative Dress Bayonet, 2. Reiter-Regiment

(Heer Bajonett). An extremely well-preserved Heer commemorative dress bayonet, measuring 400 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 250 mm-long polished magnetic metal blade with a sharpened tip and unspoiled edges. The obverse features a highly-detailed acid-etched inscription of “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN MEINE DIENSTZEIT, 2. REITER REGT. ANGERBURG/OSTPR.” (“IN MEMORY OF MY SERVICE TIME, 2. REITER- REGT. ANGERBURG/OSTPR.”). It sits securely within a nickel-plated one-piece hilt with a hooked quillon and insertion slot retaining a functional spring catch with push-button release. An intact blade leather buffer pad covers the seam where the blade meets the upper crossguard. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite comprise the handle grip, and are fastened together with dual magnetic metal rivets. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft for attachment to a frog. The throat retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the bayonet in place during storage, and is held together by a single side rivet. Minor issues consistent with age and use are evident, but this rare unit-attributed example is in an overall extremely fine condition.
