Germany, Ordnungspolizei. A Dress Bayonet, by Alcoso
(Ordnungspolizei Bajonett). An extremely well-preserved Ordnungspolizei dress bayonet, measuring 420 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 245 mm-long polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and unspoiled edges, with a fuller running approximately three-quarters of each side. It is unmarked with the exception of a maker’s logo of “ASC” for Alcoso (formerly the firm of Alexander Coppel) of Solingen, set within the company’s classic scale logo. The blade sits securely within a one-piece nickel-plated hilt, with the seam covered by a fully intact blackened leather buffer pad. The crossguard consists of a hook quillon bearing raised oak leaves on each side. Two piece of polished staghorn comprise the handle grip, held together with two non-magnetic metal rivets, with the obverse inset with an insignia consisting of a silvered bronze Ordnungspolizei logo measuring 20 mm (w) x 21 mm (h). It completes with a hooked pommel in the form of a double-sided eagle’s head. As a decorative blade, the pommel lacks an insertion slot. The bayonet is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a magnetic metal shaft wrapped with a layer of boiled blackened leather. Nickel-plated non-magnetic metal fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat. The latter retains a functional spring clip, securely holding the bayonet in place during storage, and features a downward-pointing hook connecting to a period original frog. The former is constructed of black leather and stitched into a loop for belt suspension. Also wrapped around the frog is a portepee consisting of a stylized acorn constructed of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire interspersed with green threading, and suspended from a black leather cord bearing a central red machine-embroidered band flanked by silver aluminum wire tresses. The bayonet demonstrates only minor loss of finish to the nickel-plated features, in addition to slight material fatigue to the leather elements and portepee. It is in an overall extremely fine condition.
