Germany, Ordnungspolizei. A Dress Bayonet, by Carl Eickhorn
(Ordnungspolizei Bajonett). A well-preserved and high-quality Ordnungspolizei dress bayonet, measuring 50 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 33.5 cm-long nickel-plated magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and unspoiled edges. A fuller runs the majority of the length of each side, while the reverse ricasso bears a stamped maker’s mark of “CARL EICKHORN, SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s classic squirrel logo. Stamped onto the spine of the blade is a property mark in the form of a star. The blade sits securely within a two-piece nickel-plated alloy hilt with a hooked quillon. The pommel takes the form of a double-sided eagle’s head, and is unslotted. Two strips of polished staghorn compose the handle grips, and are secured together with dual non-magnetic metal rivets. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered Ordnungspolizei insignia measuring 20 mm (w) x 22 mm (h). It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a pressed black leather shaft. Nickle-plated fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat, with the latter featuring a downward-pointing hook for the accommodation of a frog. The throat also retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the bayonet in place during storage. The bayonet demonstrates minor issues consistent with age and wear, including some tarnishing of the blade, loosening of the crossguard, and denting of the scabbard fixtures. It is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
