Germany, Ordnungspolizei. A Dress Bayonet, by Robert Klaas
(Ordnungspolizei Bajonett). A well-preserved Ordnungspolizei dress bayonet, measuring 39 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 20 cm-long nickel-plated magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. The blade features double-sided fullers, and has a maker’s mark on the reverse ricasso of “ROBERT KLAAS, SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s double crane logo. The blade sits securely within a one-piece, nickel-plated alloy hilt with a hooked quillon and pommel, and with an intact black leather buffer pad covering the seam. The pommel is inset with a hollow insertion slot retaining a functional push-button release. Two strips of polished staghorn compose the handle grip, and are secured in place with dual non-magnetic metal rivets. The obverse of the grip bears a silvered bronze Ordnungspolizei insignia in the form of an oval oak leaf wreath overlaid by a German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 22 mm (w) x 18 mm (h). It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. The side of the shaft features a downward-pointing hook for the accommodation of an optional frog, while the throat retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the bayonet in place during storage. The former connects to a period original scabbard, constructed of multiple pieces of pressed blackened leather, stitched into a loop for belt suspension. Wrapped around the frog is a mis-matched portepee, consisting of a stylized silver aluminum wire acorn highlighted around the cap with black threaded, suspended from a silver aluminum wire cord flanked by machine-embroidered green tresses. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, minor flecking of the nickel-plated features, and some material fatigue to the leather frog. The set is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
